Drei Attribute, die einem Jazzmusiker zu Popularität verhelfen können: Virtuosität, Individualität und Vielseitigkeit. In Glücksfällen besitzen manche zwei davon. In Europa gibt es besonders einen, der in seinem ganzen musikalisch-konzeptionellen Denken derart schlüssig die unterschiedlichsten theoretischen Ansätze und praktischen Spielweisen bündelt, um daraus eine neue Einheit zu gestalten: Louis Sclavis.
Der 56jährige reflektiert die Geschichte der abendländischen Musik ebenso wie die Entwicklung der amerikanischen Jazztradition und greift bei Bedarf unverblümt auf Elemente französischer Folklore, vor allem aus der Bretagne und der Auvergne, zurück. Sclavis’ großes Plus ist dabei besonders seine unverdorbene Offenheit. "Ich kümmere mich eigentlich längst nicht mehr um reine Stile, um Jazz, Folklore, Klassik, Rock oder andere Dinge. Es sind hauptsächlich die Leute, mit denen ich spiele, die meine Musik prägen."
Zu ebendiesen Leuten gehört Vincent Courtois, der zur absoluten Weltelite unter den Cellisten zu zählen ist. Der mit Preisen Überhäufte steht an den oben genannten Attributen seinem Duo-Partner keineswegs nach, ist in den Stilrichtungen des Jazz ebenso bewandert wie in historischer und zeitgenössischer Musik. Mal melodisch verspielt, dann wieder spröd und abstrakt, wird in der Bandbreite zwischen fragilen Klangskulpturen bis hin zu satten rockigen Zerrbildern das reichhaltige musikalische Repertoir dieses außergewöhnlichen Musikers erlebbar.
Sclavis und Courtois verbindet ein langes gemeinsames Musizieren in unzähligen Formationen, im Duo ist die Essenz dieser Zusammenarbeit wohl am deutlichsten. Mit scheinbarer Leichtigkeit verbinden sich dabei Musikstile und Spielweisen über Epochen hinweg auf geradezu unvergleichliche Weise - als wäre es das Selbstverständlichste.

Virtuosity, individuality and versatility – three attributes which can help a jazz musician become distinguished. Fortunate ones may be gifted with two of them. In Europe one musician particularly embodies the most different theoretical approaches and practical styles of play in such a logical way that he creates an entirely new entity: Louis Sclavis.
The fifty-six year old reflects the history of western music as well as the development of the American jazz tradition and, when necessary, bluntly harks back to elements of French folk music – predominantly those from Brittany and Auvergne.
Sclavis’ big plus is his unashamed sincerity: “I haven’t cared about pure style for a long time now – about jazz, folk, classical, rock or other things. It’s actually the people I play with who shape my music.”
Vincent Courtois, one of the most outstanding cellists in the world, is one of these. This much-decorated musician is in no way inferior to his partner when it comes to the aforementioned qualities. Like Sclavis, Courtois also experimented with jazz – both historical and contemporary. Sometimes melodically discordant then brittle and abstract, his music ranges from fragile sound sculptures to rich, rocking distortion allowing you to experience the extensive musical repertoire of this extraordinary musician.
Whilst Sclavis and Courtois have played in many different lineups and formations their co-operation is most evident as a duo.
With consummate ease they combine music genres and styles of play from different eras in an utterly unparalleled manner, as if it were the most natural thing to do.
